(OP)
I am interested in experiences relating to the field use of rugged computers vs. traditional commercial laptops.  Are they worth the extra money?

RE: Rugged mobile computers

I work in mining iron ore for a large maintenance dept. in the field I have not experienced anything better than an "toughbook" oil and shock resistant and have a very good screen. check it out

RE: Rugged mobile computers

Our field guys use Toughbooks.  I doubt that the even more expensive hardened units out there are worth it.  the TBs that we have lost were driven over or dropped 100s of feet.
