Need to find a type of formable plate

Need to find a type of formable plate

Need to find a type of formable plate

(OP)
I am producing a part for my customer that is a bracket made from 5/16" Plate. The problem I had for the first run is that the parts cracked at the radus at the 90º angle. I orginally made the parts from A572-50. I also have some alternative materials I can use, but have not been able to locate them. Does anyone have a source for the following materials?

ASTM A656-50
ASTM A1011 - HSLAS-formable grade 50
ASTM A1018 - HSLAS-formable grade 50

We are located in Ohio.

Thanks,
Mark

RE: Need to find a type of formable plate

What are is your required quantity?  Large enough to order from a steel mill, or smaller so that you need to order from a steel service center?

Cory

Quanities are too small for a mill order. I have tried all the service centers I could think of. Including Ryerson, Oneal, Central, Alro, Chapel, Mac, Olympic, among many others.

RE: Need to find a type of formable plate

HSLA Gr 50 is a very common material.  Any distribution or service center should carry it.  We do a ton of forming with this stuff, and it's really nice to work with.

RE: Need to find a type of formable plate

The cracking on the grade 50 was probably because of the  bending radius you used. Normally grade 50 needs 2 time material thickness bend radius. A lower strength grade such as A36 will probably meet your requirements depending on what your customer's spec on the print says. 1011 will give you more formability but usually it is not required for a simple bend in this thin of material.

RE: Need to find a type of formable plate

The improved formability plate or coil which you are trying to find may be difficult to locate in small quantities. I would try all the steel service centers in your area in an attempt to locate the desired steel.
If you can't locate the steel desired you will have to review the forming process and see if you can stop the cracking.

1. Make sure you are bending across the grain.

2. Use the largest radius forming punch which meets the radius requirement on the part.

3. Use a V-die with an opening of at least 8 times the material thickness, 2.5" opening. Possibly go to 3" opening.

4. Warm up the part 300-400 degrees F.

Russel Metals - B&T Steel div carries JDM A13C.  They are located in Canada 1-800-263-6597.
