Need to find a type of formable plate
Need to find a type of formable plate
(OP)
I am producing a part for my customer that is a bracket made from 5/16" Plate. The problem I had for the first run is that the parts cracked at the radus at the 90º angle. I orginally made the parts from A572-50. I also have some alternative materials I can use, but have not been able to locate them. Does anyone have a source for the following materials?
ASTM A656-50
ASTM A1011 - HSLAS-formable grade 50
ASTM A1018 - HSLAS-formable grade 50
We are located in Ohio.
Thanks,
Mark

If you can't locate the steel desired you will have to review the forming process and see if you can stop the cracking.
1. Make sure you are bending across the grain.
2. Use the largest radius forming punch which meets the radius requirement on the part.
3. Use a V-die with an opening of at least 8 times the material thickness, 2.5" opening. Possibly go to 3" opening.
4. Warm up the part 300-400 degrees F.
