Spur gearbox vs Planetary

Spur gearbox vs Planetary

Spur gearbox vs Planetary

(OP)
Hello All,
I am looking for a white paper (searched here and did not find) on the subject of pros and cons of Planetary gearboxes over Spur gearboxes.
Does anyone here have an idea where I could find such an animal?
I thank you all for your time and efforts
Fritz

RE: Spur gearbox vs Planetary

fritzl65,

Machinerys Handbook or Dudley's Practical Gear Design will tell you what you need to know about the basics of spur and planetary gear trains.

I don't know what your application is but I would suggest sticking to spur gears.  A few things to note about the two:

-Spur gears are a little less complicated to manufacture and package than a planetary.

-A simple planetary is somewhat limited in ratio with a single stage, compared to a single spur mesh.

-A single planetary stage will give you a coaxial input/output; A single spur mesh will give an offset input/output.

-A planetary gear set will be a bit lighter than a spur gear set for a given shaft torque.

Good luck.
terry
