Heat Balance Equation

Heat Balance Equation

Heat Balance Equation

(OP)
If I want to write down a heat balance equation for a control volume where some chemical reaction is goin on then how correct will it be to say that the heat generated within the control volume is equal to the enthalpy of that reaction.

RE: Heat Balance Equation

seems prettey correct to me its a conservative number but most likely OK.

Best regards

Morten

RE: Heat Balance Equation

I would say the heat generated = change in enthalpy of the control volume.

RE: Heat Balance Equation

Be a little more general please. Nothing said about the process being isolated or adiabatic, so,
Change in enthalpy of the control volume =
Heat generated + heat flow into the colume from surroundings + work done on control volume.
Caution: Be careful with units and signs.

RE: Heat Balance Equation

Concur with djack...you need to account for any mass and/or heat flow across the boundaries and work done by or on the control volume, including "flow work."  Absent more specifics about your situation, I would start by consulting a good Thermo book on how to set this up.

Good luck

RE: Heat Balance Equation

Read what he writes guys:

" the heat generated within the control volume is equal to the enthalpy of that reaction"

He dosnt say thats the entire ballance - just asks about the reaction bit!

Best regards

Morten
