Function words

(OP)

Kindly post an explanation concerning the correct use of the words in, at, on. Example: speaking of tabulated items, are these in, on, or at the table?

RE: Function words

Tabulated items are in the table.
Dinner guests are at the table.
The food and cutlery are on the table.

RE: Function words

Hey, I've also seen dinner guests on the table, and cutlery in the table too...

RE: Function words

and I've seen times listed on a table of train arrivals and departures!

Why did someone "star" the OP?

RE: Function words

Isn't the English language wonderful!

RE: Function words

The information you request can be found IN the table of people who were sitting AT the table, which is lying ON the table.

RE: Function words

If the people listed in the table were at the table, why did they get up from the table on which the table was lying?

RE: Function words

Who at the table was lying about who was laying on the table?

RE: Function words

The person who was in the know about who was lying about who was laying on the table with the cutlery in them and the table.

RE: Function words

I recommend we table this discussion.  clown

RE: Function words

What discussion?

RE: Function words

the discussion in the forum on the use of in on and at at the request of the OP.

RE: Function words

(OP)

I assume msquared48 would prefer to call it chat or causerie rather than discussion.

RE: Function words

No...the request was an "explanation".
