We are trying to create a waterproof joint between stainless steel and perspex sheets. How can we do that? are there any adhesive having the ability to joint those two materials together creating waterproof bond.

RE: adhesive to join stainless steel and perspex

A little more information is needed.

What is the physical nature of the joint?

Thickness of the two materials.

How waterproof?

What are the temperatures the part will see?

I would seek out 3M.  Try this link to their industrial adhesives:

I have used DP125 in the past to bond 304SS to urethane.  You should be able to source the appropriate waterproof adhesive for bonding stainless to plexiglas with 3M adhesives.  A quick call to their technical assistance 1-800-362-3550 will give you the right adhesive quickly.

Also, like unclesyd said, strength of the joint, environmental conditions and dimensional quantities (like surface area contact) will all be very important.

"Perspex" is the trade name of a specific family of Acrylic-based materials manufactured by Lucite, however it is also commonly used as a generic term for "clear plastic stuff".

Are you really using PerspexTM, or some other clear plastic stuff?  Specifically what grade?  What type of stainless steel?

What types of loads will the joint need to support?

RE: adhesive to join stainless steel and perspex

Any engineering adhesive will bond the two together   but whatever you finally select, do some tests first. We once  used a propriety adhesive called Tensol Cement to bond perspex to itself but its a solvent based glue and the solvent somehow caused stress cracks to radiate out from the holes drilled near the bonded joint. It did mot weaken the job but it looked funny!

Do you really want an adhesive or are you looking for a sealant?  I would guess that a silicone sealant would do the job.  Check with Sika or Corning as to the compatibility with your materials.

A long time age I got a set for books from Locktite (sp) that covered most of there products and how to us them.  The books are good and I would think that 3m would have the same set of books for there products.  Call up you reps.

I am at home for the next few days, but I think that Black Max might do the job.
