Reverse load on gear box
Reverse load on gear box
(OP)
Hello,
What happens if gear box is loaded in reverse direction continuously? Are there any restrictions on load (% of rated load), time (max. time allowed) for reverse loading of the gears?
The GB in question has helical gears and is planetary type gear reduction.
Thanks
SPM

Depends on the design of the gearbox. With single helical gears, driving it backwards will reverse all of the thrust loads on the bearings. And the bearing sets may be designed to carry thrust loads only in one direction.
Some high performance gearboxes have lube jets positioned based on a certain direction of gear rotation. Some high performance gears are also manufactured with lead correction to compensate for torsional wind-up, and that lead correction is based on the direction of rotation.
You'd best contact the manufacturer to be sure.
