Glycol Colouring

Glycol Colouring

Glycol Colouring

(OP)
We recently have a problem with regards to our propylene glycol solution. The glycol solution is used as a secondary refrigerant for our ammonia refregeration system. The problem is the perenial leaking of glycol solution along pipes, valves or glycol-cooled tanks. We dont have any idea on how to locate leaking glycol solution. Except for the idea of putting a colour in the glycol solution. Can anybody help me what type colouring we need?

RE: Glycol Colouring

Usually the glycol is colored by supplier.  Contact the company you bought the glycol from and they can help.
Coastal Chemical in Houston is who I've used before.

RE: Glycol Colouring

Do a posted above or check your auto parts house for the fluorescent cooling system leak detector. You can get this dye in larger quanities.

Here are two other approaches to detect your leaks, it is again the tracer dyes and the colorimetric papers.

I would contact American Gas with your specific problem.

RE: Glycol Colouring

Some of the Dow grades of their Dow Frost product are colored or at least that is what I think I was reading the other day in their technical manual.  Sorry but that manual is on my work laptop and I'm too lazy to google it here.  Anyone interested can do so.

Thank you. I guess I will have to consult first with our glycol supplier.
