Boiler Steam Drum Tubesheet Damage
Boiler Steam Drum Tubesheet Damage
(OP)
Hi everyone. I'm working on evaporator tubes replacement for my package boiler. During removal of a tube stub from the steam drum, we accidentally damaged the tubesheet while grinding off the tube stub. We used a small grinder to grind off the tube stub because we don't have a tube cutter, and also we're not confident of using cutting torch to remove the tube stubs. After assessing the damage, we found that the grinder's cut is 5mm deep.
My question is, what options do I have to repair this damage? Our tube attachment is expanded and flared.
Steam drum material: A516-70
Steam drum tube hole diam: 50.8mm
Tube material: A192
Really appreciate your comments. Thanks.

RE: Boiler Steam Drum Tubesheet Damage
You can locally weld repair this damage without the need for PWHT, and re-machine the tubeshhet face to re-establish the hole geometry for flaring.
For welding you need to follow the repair requirements in the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) and specifically follow Alternative Welding Method 1. Does the repair organization have a valid Certificate of Repair from the National Board?
