Bearing Crush and Hoop Stress Calculation???

Bearing Crush and Hoop Stress Calculation???

Bearing Crush and Hoop Stress Calculation???

(OP)
Does anyone know of a standard or how to calculate the hoop stress caused by bearing crush.  Thanks for your help.

RE: Bearing Crush and Hoop Stress Calculation???

First cut might be the difference in diameters, as a percentage of diameter and thus circumference or length, and that equals strain.
Stress = E x strain

Sorry I do not follow your suggestion but thank you for replying and writing down the definition of stress.

-- Contact pressure calculation --
After several days of research, to calculate the bearing crush contact pressure, you can assume an interference fit pressure calculation of a bushing being press fit in a hole of smaller diameter.  If anyone is interested I can explain further.

RE: Bearing Crush and Hoop Stress Calculation???

3.0000 inch OD bearing fit in a 2.9980 in ID bore in a massively stiff housing so the bearing takes it all.

new bearing OD = 2.9980

change in diameter = 0.0020/3.0000 = 0.00067 inches/inch

E steel = 30,000,000 psi

Stress = E x strain

stress = 30,000,000 x 0.00067 = 20,000 psi

using circumferences would be proportionally the same.

Note bearing insert/race section area does not enter into it, but would determine how hard the bolts must squeeze to just close the housing's parting face gap
