Lifting lug design

Lifting lug design

Lifting lug design

(OP)
Hi !!

I am a Design Engineer and i am designing lifting lugs for horizontal pressure vessel.

can anybody recommend me a reference for this purpose because in most reference books e.g MOASS ,lifting lug design is given for vertical vessels' lifting lugs.

Regards
Ibrahim

RE: Lifting lug design

why would the lug design be any different ?

what would be different, though i don't believe it'll be a problem, is what happens to the pressure vessel when it's being lifted (ie, bending) ?

well i think i should make the question more clear.I work on COMPRESS and it does not provide an option to design "ear type lifting lug" for horizontal pressure vessel.so i want to design it on some other basis, for which i am trying to find out a reference/standard. Or may i use the same reference as i use to design for vertical LL??

RE: Lifting lug design

I like lifting lugs made with a large radius above the hole. Design such that the max stress is tensile thru both sides of the lug. Locate the lugs roughly in line with the shell whether vertical vessel or horizontal design. This will minimize bending moments imposed on the shell.

RE: Lifting lug design

Pressure Vessel Handbook by Eugene F. Megysey has an alternative lifting lug design to one in Moss.

I believe the "Type 1" lug in Moss is applicable to horizontal vessels.

RE: Lifting lug design

Do a search post, this subject has been discussed many times.

RE: Lifting lug design

Try ASME BTH-1 and "Proposed Deisgn Criterion for Vessel Lifting Lugs in Liew of ASME B30.20" by Dennis K. Williams.
