Hi There
 
I am designing welded connection where steel plate (50 mm) is connected to supporting tubular ( Wall thickness 30mm  ). Plate is connected to tubular member by double v groove welding. I would like to know what is maximum weld size permitted in case of groove welds ( single / double v shape butt weld).Considering maximum weld size allowed can I use full penetration weld or should try to limit to partially penetration groove weld. It will be very helpful if you help me out to find criteria ( As per AWS) which limits maximum groove weld size. should I limit weld size to supporting member plate thickness ?
 Due to design requirement I can not use fillet weld.

Do you have a copy of the AWS code or an AISC manual?  Generally there is no maximum size groove weld.  There are a variety of weld joint geometry solutions, and the weld size is dependent on which geometry you want to use.  It will also depend on what position you expect to do the welding, and how the connection is arranged.  I don't understand exactly what you want in your final geometry from your description.

I don't know why you wouldn't be able to use a CJP weld and fully develop your plate. The limiting factor will likely be the tube wall. You can use AISC 13 K1.3b to find what Le of weld you can use on the wall then calculate the shear rupture strength of the wall and match your weld size to that.
