Heat Pump COP Calculation

Heat Pump COP Calculation

Heat Pump COP Calculation

(OP)
We have a water to air heat pump with open loop [pump and dump].  What info is needed to calculate its coefficent of performance and how is the calculation made?

RE: Heat Pump COP Calculation

The coefficient of performance, or COP (sometimes CP), of a heat pump is the ratio of the change in heat at the "output" (the heat reservoir of interest) to the supplied work

COP = Eu / Ea

where

COP = coefficient of performance

Eu = useful energy acquired (btu in imperial units)

Ea = energy applied (btu in imperial units)

COP can be used to define both cooling efficiencies or heating efficiencies as for a heat pumps.

Cooling -  COP is defined as the ratio of of heat removal to energy input to the compressor
Heating - COP is defined as the ratio of heat delivered to energy input to the compressor

RE: Heat Pump COP Calculation

ARI tests are done at certain temperatures to compare units apple-to-apples.  You can also check with the manufacturer on the EER performace characteristics.  You may be able to get the exact performace given the temperatures you are using.   This will be different from ARI, as it will be giving the performace characteristics that more closely match what you have.   This is much better translated into what you will spend on your electric bill for operating the HP than a straight ARI number.
