Appendix 13 - stayed headers

Appendix 13 - stayed headers

Appendix 13 - stayed headers

(OP)
Hi folks,

I am designing a rectangular header box for a fin-fan cooler to Appendix 13. All the usual calculations have been performed and the item is designed with a permanent stay bar to divide the unit into two tubeside passes.

I want to design the return header with a stay plate to reduce thickness of plug plate and tubeplate etc. If I cut flow holes in this plate (equivalent in area to the tube csa) can I simply perform a metal replacement calculation on the plate and increase it's thickness accordingly?

The item will be U Stamped but I cannot contact our authorized inspector at present and I was wondering if anyone could offer a view on our proposal.

Many thanks

RE: Appendix 13 - stayed headers

When you are doing the calculations for the return header, you must determine the ligament efficiency of the stay plate with holes, such as you have done for the tubesheet.
