Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

(OP)
Howdy all,

I'm looking into the comparative cost of structural columns made from steel pipe vs. reinforced concrete.  I'm guessing that reinforced concrete columns are cheaper, since that's how they construct freeway overpass columns.  However, it would be great to have some approximate numbers on this.  Does anyone out there know?

RE: Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

Apples?  Oranges?  Depends on the season which is cheapest.  Same thing with steel and concrete.  Depends on a lot of factors, especially location within the worldwide economy.  In other words, there is no simple or universally correct answer to your question.  Direct comparison is required for a given project in a given location.  And no, the freeway overpass column analogy is not apt, and they are not always concrete.

RE: Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

I second the motion to hokie66...  Steel offers cut-off time in construction because it is readily available from fabricators but it is more expensive.  Concrete offers economy but you also have to consider additional time (maybe curing procedures and probably additional manpower).

...and columns for what purpose, size and construction in what environment? Cost/lifetime/maintenance...???

The best way is to ask two, or best three, qualified building companies for a preliminary budget offer, giving a description of the factual demands, location, starting up and finished date requirements.

hi
is there any book/pamplet which can be used like a small notebook just to verify the design calculations while working as a newly appointed site engineer?

RE: Reinf. concrete vs. steel columns: cost comparison???

No, you must know the loads and load path envisioned by the designer.  Ask for a copy of the designer's calculations for a primer on your project.

I do not see why a site engineer would be verifying design calculations. Is that part of your job description?
