AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
(OP)
In AWS D1.1 welding procedure qulification, what is the difference between the Qualification by tesing and Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). It looks like they are the same.
Please advise, thanks.
Please advise, thanks.

RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
Both weldors and procedures must be tested. PQR's are used to qualify a procedure to deem the welding variables acceptable, while personnel qualification is used to test the weldor's ability to perform a sound weld.
RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
To qualify by testing you would need to perform a PQR. You are correct
RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
The variables in the WPS are specified based on Pre-qualification varaibles. I do not know why the vendor provided a tested report but still used the variables for pre-qualified WPS.
RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
It sounds like you might be looking at a sample form in AWS D1.1 annex N. It is possible to have a prequalified and qualified by testing WPS with the same variables. It could be a typo that marked the form as qualified by testing accidental. I would ask the vendor for an explanation. Not having the ability to properly document a wps qualification raises a flag and I would want to investigate it further.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.
RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
In the same vain you can write a PQR for a say an assembly line weld and weld it on the line and if the weld passes inspection again the welder and PQR are certified/qualified.
In both cases there isn't a separate qualifying weld for the PQR.
RE: AWS D1.1: Qualification by testing VS Procedure Qualifcation Record
The PQR check box is used to indicate that the entire document is a PQR.
The form used to document the testing ranges may look exactly like the WPS except for having the test results and indicate that it is a PQR.
As an example the form shown at http://files.aws.org/technical/forms/N-1.pdf
If the top box is checked for "WPS" then one of the two lines below need to be filled in to indicate whether the procedure is prequalified or qualified.
If the check box for PQR is filled in then the record is a PQR and nothing above it should be selected and the back page will need tio be filled out with the test results.
Also in refernce to qualification on production welds.
If you qualify a procedure the coupon, specimens and tests must conform to the requirements of D1.1.

Thanks.
If line "Qualification By Testing" is checked, the welding Procedure qulification shall follow AWS D1.1 Section 4 using the parameters for the test coupon. Right?

(Yeah, I'm coming in late, but this seems not to have been stated explicitly in this thread so far.)
