structures design report

(OP)
Hi guys,

I have recently been asked by my DOT to submit a structures design report with other documentation for a rural bridge structure. My question is:

What information should I include in a structures design report?

I am thinking of including magnitude of loads, load combinations, methods of analysis, performance under temperature effects etc, forces and design of members.

Has anyone ever been required to provide a report along with there design?

RE: structures design report

You should also include all your references, and what design standards you were working too.

Try not to include acronyms as nobody will have a clue what you are talking about, ie. what is a DOT?

We have to do a design report with all the analysis and design.  It ia common industry practice (subsea construction)

I scribbled together a document which I use as an aide memoir.  The specifics wont be of use but the format might help

RE: structures design report

What alternatives did you consider in terms of materials and layout?  Why were those not selected eliminated?

RE: structures design report

corus, DOT = Department of Transportation, the folks in charge of bridges.

RE: structures design report

Normally DOT's have standard formats for these reports.

Here's a link to NYSDOT Bridge Manual

https://www.nysdot.gov/divisions/engineering/structures/manuals/bridge-manual-usc

Look at Section 3; it provides information required in a strucutres justification report. The Manual also refers to a Design Approval Document. This could be an EIS or EA

For those unfamiliar with the terms:

EIS - Environmental Impact Statement
EA - Environmental Assessment

DOT's generally follow the Federal outline.

Some DOT's use what's called TS&L Study - Type, Size & Location. They include:
Project Description
Span Arrangement
Governing Specifications
Design Method
Loading
Materials
Superstructure Types
Substructure Types
Special Considerations
Cost Estimate
Recommendation
Sketches
