RE: Rock blasting

As I was told very early in my career,  this is not a subject that can be learned from text books. You need to work directly with experienced blasting personnel.

The other pearl of wisdom is you dont learn anything from the sucessfull blasts..... you only learn from the ones you screw up..... and on that basis,  I'm now an expert!!!!

RE: Rock blasting

corps of engineers also has a good manual on blasting that is available online

RE: Rock blasting

In our state they require a blaster's license.  I'd inquire from them (the state licensing agency) how to get it and perhaps some guidance.

The US Bureau of Mines has conducted tests on what it takes to cause building damage and that has been published.  They also may have some guidance publications.

There are numerous requirements on how to handle and transport the stuff.

My guess is that, unless you need this for your projects, etc. it won't be worth the trouble.

RE: Rock blasting

oldestguy is right on. Here at our site, the blaster must have a government license.  Not only that, it is only good for one mine at a time.  If he quits to change mines, he must turn in his license at the one mine and get another license for the other mine - sort of like changing driver's licenses when moving to another state.  If you want to learn for your own education, there are several references out there - I have a Russian book on the subject - but leave the blasting to the blasters. Just as one would leaving the clearing of UXO to the EODs (except I let my son try his hand at it in Laos -- a long time ago - but he was supervised).

RE: Rock blasting

I once worked as a "powder-monkey's helper," and after saying "Damn, that was entertaining!" I'll concur with the earlier responders about seeking expert help. Depending on your specific situation, have you considered expansive grout?
