Heat tracing calculation
Heat tracing calculation
(OP)
Dear sirs
I would like to ask your help for some published reference about heat tracing calculation for insulated pipelines.
I did already some search but I did not found anything I would define as usefull. I started by consulting the Piping handbook (Nayyar et. Al.) but there they describe very well the use of a program for calculation from a Company which is primary interested in selling electrical heat tracing (I agree this is for most of the applications better but not for all).
I also took a look at the sites of Thermon, Cromolox and Raychem but I feel they focus strongly on Electrical tracing.
In my specific case I would like to keep the product cool because it is sensitive to high temperatures therefore no chance with electrical nor steam calculations will help.
Rgs.

RE: Heat tracing calculation
Do you need to keep it colder than the surrounding ambient?

Frankly speaking: The answers did not replied the question which was about published references for heat tracing calculations.
I am sure the answers were well intented and I agree on them but this do not help if you have to calculate.
Mintjulep,
You are 100% right

RE: Heat tracing calculation
You might find more references if you looked for "cooling jackets" rather than "heat tracing". As you have found, "heat tracing" generally refers to an electrical jacketed system that prevents pipes from freezing rather than a cooling system.
One of the things that would help narrow recommendations is a better understanding of what you're trying to do: are you protecting your process fluid from a hot external environment or do you need to remove heat from the process fluid to keep it from overheating?
