PMT Transformer circuit in-rush

PMT Transformer circuit in-rush

We are trying to start up some 1.5 MW wind turbines using two 1500 diesel gen sets and a 6MW load bank. We are having problem with the PF and inrush when we go to enegize these units. I have a couple of questions.

1st. When we energize our 1.5 KVA PMT's for the first time we are seeing more in rush then when we tryin this the secound time. Is this due to the transformer being cold or are the transformers windings being charged?

2nd.  Is there a way to slow this inrush?

RE: PMT Transformer circuit in-rush

How are you measuring the inrush?  There is a transient dc component to the transformer inrush that is a function of the phase angle of the ac voltage when the breaker is closed.  So this will be different every time.  If you could always close the breaker at peak voltage, there would be no transformer inrush.

We are useing a fluke analyzer

RE: PMT Transformer circuit in-rush

That doesn't tell us much - do you know how many Fluke products there are?

Anyway, you are probably seeing the dc transient current as I mentioned earlier.  It has nothing to do with the transformer being cold.

We are using a Fluke 1750
