Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

I am using NX5.  A supplier has sent me an STL file for us to create a rapid prototype (we have our own machine.) I want to cut the part into two sections before I send it to our RP machine.  I can import it into NX without a problem, but since it is a faceted body I haven't been able to do any modifications to it.  Is there a work-around for this or am I stuck?

RE: Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

Have you tried creating a plane (where you want to section it) and then "split" them?
If you cannot find the "spilt" icon then go into command finder (under HELP) and enter "split".
It would probably best best if you used a rectangle to select everything that you need to split.

That doesn't work.  The problem is that the target has to be a solid body, not a faceted body.

RE: Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

You are right, I am sorry.
I brought a faceted body into a file and cannot do anything with it. I am going to work on this when I have free time today and get back to you if I come up with something.

Thanks, but don't spend too much time on it unless you are really bored.  I managed to do what I wanted using the rapid prototyper software.

We have a Stratasys Titan FDM machine, in case you're curious.

RE: Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

I think the easiest course of action would be to ask the supplier for a parasolid or step file (assuming you have a step translator). Our shop has a RP machine and they always ask for a parasolid file from the designers so that they can do any modifications (such as splitting) before they write out the stl file.

You are correct, I could have requested a parasolid but our schedule is tight and I needed to get the job started.

RE: Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

Hello,

You can do something with this faceted body. You can do sections to that faceted body.

You can also go to Edit->Facet Body and you have some tools to work with faceted bodies.

Frank.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately that requires a Studio Free Form license.

RE: Can I modify a faceted body? (NX5)

Ok, you are right, the options inside Edit -> facet body requires studio free form.

The Insert -> Curve from bodies -> Section doesn't

Frank.
