PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

(OP)
Greetings,

I am looking for information on the chemical resistance of polyethylene and polypropylene towards acetonitrile solvent.  I am in need of drums to store acetonitrile solutions but would prefer to stay away from any metal if I can due to low tolerance for metal contamination (ppm levels).

I have found lots of chemical resistance charts but none so far have had acetonitrile listed on them - probably not a good sign.

Does anyone know of a good reference for this solvent's compatibility with plastics?

Thanks in advance,

JoeChem

RE: PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

The best reference I know: Chemical Resistance of Plastics and Elastomers published by William Andrew Publishing as part of their Plastics Design Library (PDL Handbook Series).  Knovel offers an electronic version of this book that can be sorted by chemical or plastic/elastomer type.  Table shows fluoropolymers ("excellent") and PP ("no significant effect", "satisfactory resistance") as being suitable.  Use the following link for more information on this reference book.

I suggest visiting a University library if the price is more than you can justify.  Worldcat shows a list of libraries that have this reference:

RE: PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

for PP i'ev found these data on NACE Corsur:

Polypropylene (PP)  acetonitrile  C2H3N  NACE resistance rating: 1  resistance note:recommended  Conc:100% Temp:60–70°C

for PE i didn't find any data on corsur, you can try here:

RE: PE/PP Resistance to Acetonitrile

Dear All:

Probably diffusion with swelling and subsequent mechanical retention is the bottom line with the proposed materials, at least in the lower temperature range (do not expect surface corrosion). Is there any information on mechanical requirements and/or lifetime specifications?
