Creating a label outline

Creating a label outline

Creating a label outline

(OP)
I have a cup shape (like a styrofoam coffee cup) with tapered profile.  Is there a way I can translate the surface to produce a die line that would serve as a label outline?  I'm thinking I could do a zero offset surface... but is there a way to flatten it to produce the outline shape.... or maybe there's a better way.... any suggestions?

thanks

RE: Creating a label outline

If you can create the shape with a sheet metal Lofted Bend you would be able to flatten it, otherwise I don't think so.

Does the installed label have to conform to a specific shape? i.e. Does it have to be a rectangle when viewed from the front? Are tapered or curved edges acceptable?

You could use the Wrap function to project a sketch around a conical face, and adjust the sketch to give the final outline you need.

cheers

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try both the lofted bend and try flattening the shape and try the wrap function.... and see if I can get those to work.

RE: Creating a label outline

I did that for a prescription bottle label I had to render a while back.  I used the Wrap feature in the sketch.  If we start with the left edge of the label as being applied to the center of your cup (such that the edge can be truly vertical), you can then put construction lines perpendicular to that...well, here, I'll snap an image:

thanks Jeff.... that looks promising.  I'll try the wrap feature......

RE: Creating a label outline

In the case of the Wrap feature, your sketch is your label outline.  Piece o' cake.
