Hypermesh use in Aerospace companies..

Hypermesh use in Aerospace companies..

(OP)
I am a hypermesh user for more than 8 years in auto industry. Now I intend to change job in aerospace industry, so I am trying to learn Patran. It makes me so sick to learn Patran. Why do all aerospace companies stick to Patran? Howmany of them started considering other tools like Hypermesh for pre-post processing? Which aerospace company (Boeing, LM, NG, Goodrich etc) has Hypermesh?

RE: Hypermesh use in Aerospace companies..

I have used Hypermesh for around 10 years and Patran for about 2. Patran really is woeful compared to Hypermesh. I find it consistently does things that you don't want it to and doesn't do things you want it to. Oh, I could go on forever. What takes 4 clicks in Hypermesh, takes 24 clicks in Patran and even then, you're never convinced it's done it properly. It's full of after-thoughts which have just been bundled into Utilities and aren't supported properly.

If you haven't guessed, I hate this software with a passion. The last two companies I was at I was able to get Hypermesh installed and soon after, my colleagues were getting it on their machines too. I-DEAS took some getting used too but you can tame it... eventually. We have Hypermesh on site where I am now but not in this department yet. Next year, I intend to change that!

RE: Hypermesh use in Aerospace companies..

Most Aerospace companies use Patran because it was the first to take root in that industry (just like Hypermesh has a foothold in the Automotive industry). After making such an investment in money, training, developing procedures, etc. it's hard to change.

I've found that whatever application you used first, is the one you most likely will want to use. That is why new engineers who have used Ansys, FeMap, Abaqus, etc. want to use those products over the standard tools in a particular field.
