is it possible to extract parts from an assembly that  I recieved as a .sat file?

Yes, the key is that Autodesk products will only read *.sat (ACIS) files up to version 7.  To convert a later version to v7 see this magazine (I think page 72 or 28) http://www.augi.com/publications/augiworld/AUGIWorld%20091008lr.pdf

The ACIS format is owned by Spatial which is owned by Dessault the company that also owns SolidWorks. I'll let you fill in the blanks. If you are interested in the history of ACIS an Autodesk relationship simply do a Google search.
