Level of ESS testing

Level of ESS testing

An electronics assembly for subsea installation will see no real vibration in operation. What should then be the vibration level for ESS testing? We want to avoid having the ESS level be our qualification level!

RE: Level of ESS testing

There seems to be some confusion.  ESS is intended as a workmanship test, i.e., to weed out infant failures caused by poor workmanship.  It has little to do with qualification testing.

Yes, thats the thing. ESS will be qualification testing for vibrations since there is no vibrations specified on the system. So we have to design for ESS levels!!

RE: Level of ESS testing

Why?  Is that a customer requirement?  You still would need to survive both ground and ship transport environments just to get your component to its intended location.

In any case, I still fail to see what the problem is.  If you're going to run ESS anyway, then your system has to be designed to survive it, regardless of whether it's qual'd with ESS or some other environment.

Are you saying that you wouldn't design your system to survive ESS?  Wouldn't that be a bad thing?
