Please advise me on where to find Design Publications, design guides or technical papers on Tiebacks.  I am confronted with a soils report which indicates the use of tiebacks to aid retaining walls; and I would like to be well informed, unfortunately I have only shadows of ideas on their design.

RE: Tiebacks/ to find: Design publications, guides or tech.paper

Simpleton,

I have found the following texts to be most helpfull with the design of tieback systems and many other retained soil applications.

Foundation Analysis by Bowles
Principles of Foundation Engineering by Braja Das

Additionally, it wouldn't hurt to seek information from various tieback manufacturers as well.

A good publication is "Tiebacks" by the Federal Highway Administration in the US.  The report is FHWA/RD-82/047, dated July 1982.  This publication, and others, can be obtained from the National Technical Information Service, Springfield, VA.

Thank you both qShake and JAE for your helpful comments.
I have these two books and I will be trying to get the FHWA repot or similar pub.
in that site.

There is a publication called "Pile Buck: Steel Sheet Piling Design Manual" that provides example design calculations and theory with respect to tie backs.  The publication is usually provided free from sheet steel fabricators.

The Post-Tensioning Institute PTI and Dywidag Systemmes International (DSI) and Williams also have some good literature.  See www.alliance.net/~williams

Geotechnical Engineering Consultants should be consulted to determine the soil or rock parameters required for design.  The PTI provides specifications for installation and testing of rock anchors.  The suppliers of the tie backs DSI, Williams, etc. are usually helpful and may send you the information required.

The Pile Buck Company's book is very good.
