Shrink Fit Problem

Shrink Fit Problem

Shrink Fit Problem

(OP)
Hallo Everyone

I am doing 2D shrink fitting contact analysis.

Problem
The inner part is at temperature 20 C and the outer part is at temperature 200 C there is a gap of 1,1 mm in between those two parts.

The outer part is cooled to a room temperature for 70000 Seconds so that it gets shrink fitted to the inner part.

I am confused about how to give the Load steps and the substeps to be given in solution and controls.

Time at end of load step :
Automatic time stepping : Prog Chosen/On/Off

Number of substeps / Time Increment

Number of substeps :
Max. no of substeps :
Min no of substeps :
or
Time step size :
Minimum time step :
Maximum time step :

Does anybody have sample solution of 2D shrink fit contact analysis problem ??

RE: Shrink Fit Problem

Hi Again

I should have read your post more carefully, I thought you wanted to work out the stresses after cooling.
I am not aware of any cooling stages, the company i am working at;at the moment does shrink fitting and to my knowledge they just heat the one part assemble it and let it cool, but we do a stress calculation prior to assembly so we know we are not over stressing anything when its fully cooled.
I presume someone knows what the interference is between the two parts when fully cooled and therefore know what the stresses will be.

RE: Shrink Fit Problem

i'd've thought this was a "simple" hand calc, rather than an FEA ... but i'd suggest posting on the FE forum, and mentioning what code you're using (i assume you've looked up the manual, and tried the examples !)

RE: Shrink Fit Problem

Thanks for your immediate reply.

The shaft material is 42CrMo4 and the hub material is 20Mn5.

I have found out by the code the required temps for the hub and the shaft. for the hub its (200 C) and the shaft is at room temperature(20 C). there is a gap of 1.1 mm between them I want to simulate the cooling effect in ANSYS to close the gap so that it gets cooled down and get shrink fitted on the shaft.(I know the radial interference required)

I want to calculate the stress after cooling in bothe the materials (Contact analysis)

Do ypu have some examples ANSYS or some calculation using FEM programme. It would be great if you send me.

the shaft and the hub are conical in shape thats why i am investigating it by FEM.

thanks
AMU

RE: Shrink Fit Problem

post in the FE forum, under structural engineering.

descibe thread as "ANSYS contact problem".

have you tried the help desk, they're usually very helpfull.

have you tried the manual, and the example problems ?
