Operation Options

(OP)
Dear All,

I know that pumps can run by soft start or direct on line, is there are any difference in construction and design between the pumps that will run by using soft start and pumps that will run by connecting direct on line ???

Is it a problem if we run a pump with soft start if it designed to be run direct on line ???

any inputs are highly appreciated.

RE: Operation Options

No and No.

Soft start is usually employed to limit current in-rush or for some other transient within the system, the pipeline or the process.

Artisi ,

I am concern about the electrical submersible pump , I asked this question after I read some datasheets for PLEUGER motor at which they confirmed that we need to specify if the motor will run by softstart or direct online.

RE: Operation Options

Best thing to do is to ask pleuger - My guess is the motor windings but more likely the cable/s will be different depending on the starting mode.

RE: Operation Options

They may be doing something like adding capacitance at the motor to improve the power factor, thus reducing the running current and allowing a lighter cable to be used. PF caps with a soft start probably ain't the greatest idea.
