Linking drawing dimension to part sketch dimension

Linking drawing dimension to part sketch dimension

Linking drawing dimension to part sketch dimension

(OP)
Hi,

Is it possible to link a dimension in the drawing to the actual sketch dimension in the part? If yes then how?

Thanks,
Mike

RE: Linking drawing dimension to part sketch dimension

Import model items.

No this is a little difficult to explain. The part is a tube with holes in it...Now when this model is imported into a drawing the holes cannot be dimensioned since they have been created using split line, surface knit and cut thicken features due to the nature of the cut. They have to be done this way since it makes the assembly more accurate.
The holes cannot be dimensioned because they have been created on a curved surface. So is there a way to put in a dummy dimension and link it to the original 2D sketch used to create the hole in the part?

RE: Linking drawing dimension to part sketch dimension

Add a Reference Point in your 3D part model. Show that Point in your Drawing and dimension to that.

I had tried to show the sketch in the drawing view but for some reason solidworks does not pick up all the lines when you try to dimension. This is something that really baffled me.
Putting reference points is not something I would like to do because I would end up with too many reference points.

This is kind of hard to describe, so bear with me...
When editing a drawing view, there is some quirky behavior when trying to select or dimension to a visible sketch (that was done in the 3D model). You can only select geometry from a sketch, if the underlying sketch plane is parallel with the face of the monitor (or maybe "Drawing Sheet" would be better to use to describe) in this particular view. The easiest way to show this is:
1) Create a new part.
2) Draw a rectangle on the XY Plane.
3) Revolve it about the Z-Axis (you get a cylindrical or donut shape, either is ok for this example.)
4) Show the Skecth
5) Create a drawing of this part with with 6 orthagonal views.
6) Now observe...The sketch is only visible in the 2 views with the XY plane orientated parallel/flat with the monitor screen. These are the only 2 views that you will be able to dimension to the Sketch geometry.
