A client of mine has asked me to look at a stair railing with a rather unusual design. In trying to break it down into simple parts, I need to check the bending strength of a 3/8" x 1 1/2" rectangular bar about it's strong axis.

AISC 13th ed., section F11.1 covers yielding for rectangular bars with Lb*d/t^2 <= 0.08E/Fy, but is silent for bars with ratios GREATER than 0.08E/Fy. Of course, that is the case I'm up against.

I've already checked the LTB component of this problem, and I'm fine. I THINK I'm going to be fine for yielding, but the issue with the code concerns me.

Check AISC code F11-2, it has equations for slenderness ratios greater that 0.08E/Fy. LTB will control if that is the case. If slenderness is less than 0.08E/Fy than yielding controls.
