Apropriate Food Grade Rubber with high temp and high pressure

(OP)
Hi,

I need assistance in selection of rubber material for our process machine. The rubber shall be food grade because it directly in contact with product, can resist steam+product temperature max 200 deg C with max pressure of 15 bars. Include also into consideration the flash pressure during proses that cause high friction between the rubber and the steam+product. The diameter of the rubber is 190 mm OD, and 50 mm ID, with thickness of 10 mm. Thank you.

nanostructure

Silicone.

Thank you Compositepro,

Is it pure silicone rubber or we need additional reinforcement for the durability of the rubber?

If you are clamping inside and out on the flange and Inner diameter, you will definately need a fabric reinforcement. What length of movement do you require of the I.D. relative to the O.D.? You may need to have a shape molded as well. If so, contact a diaphragm manufacturer.

You are using it for a compression seal so additional reinforcement would not be necessary. Just be careful of leak paths around the edge of the o.d. Good luck.

Silicone and live steam?  I thought steam destroyed silicone rubber but I'm ready to be corrected.

Hi GrahamBennett,

Thank you for your information.  Due to your post, I did research on internet about the properties of silicone rubber and I found an interesting article in this link:

http://www.pharmpro.com/ShowPR.aspx?PUBCODE=021&ACCT=0000100&ISSUE=0709&RELTYPE=PR&ORIGRELTYPE=ATO&PRODCODE=0000&PRODLETT=N&CommonCount=0

In this article the silicone rubber is not recommended to be used in live steam. Based on their experiment the best performance is done by Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM).So what do you think about this material?

RE: Apropriate Food Grade Rubber with high temp and high pressure

Nanostructure - sorry for the delayed response.  It seems you have found your answer but please remember FFKM is very expensive and you would probably still need it to be fabric reinforced, so contact a specialist manufacturer.  I have no experience with these.

Dear Nanostructure

There are some companies now producing steam resistant FKM's (peroxide cured terpolymer types) with FDA conformity. This is a very recent development as previous FDA conforming FKM's were all bisphenol cured and had poor steam resistance.

These new FKM's should work at 200 Deg C in steam and would be far cheaper than perfluoroelastomers like Perlast or Kalrez particularly with such a large gasket like yours!

I think this company can help http:\\www.prepol.com they seem to have a complete range of FDA conforming materials.

Hi ElastomerDude

Thank you very much for your information. I'm sorry, I almost miss the information. I was full load lately so I had no chance to get into this forum. I will review the link.  Thank you once again.
