H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
(OP)
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a nut that is equivalent to the Alcoa (kaynar) p/n H97-4. It seems that the code H97-* is obsolete, and people only offers now the Boeing p/n BACN10HR*C for this code.
I can't seem to find a standard for this kind of nut, as I don't want to buy it under a boeing spec. Do any of you guys know where I can find more info?
It is not a common nut, and Alcoa doesn't manufacture nothing equivalent.
Also, I would like to know about the same nut, non silver-plated, if such thing exists.
Many thanks in advance for any help, I'm going nuts (very bad joke, I know) looking for info on this damned little piece.

RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
The PN crossover is correct.
H97-( ) was supperseded by BACN10HR [A286 or I-718, 220-KSI]
I suggest You need a BACN10HR4CD [cad plated + SFL] or BACN10HR4CF or CS [passivated + SFL].
If a 220-KSI spline nut is OK, check-out MS14491 [spec: NASM14491].
If a 180-KSI 2X-Hex nut is acceptable, then check-out NAS1805-( ).

RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
Ok, many thanks for your help.
As I said I don't want to buy under a Boeing spec, and all I needed was another reference standard.
I'll take a look into tyhe MS's you have provided.
Also, I found the same exact nut into an old catalogue yesterday, but, to my frustration, the company (voi-shan or something like that) doesn't even exist nowadays...
RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
BTW, what I need is the 220 ksi nut, cadmium plated, UNJF-3B .2500-28 thread.
RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
The torque pre-load for a 220-KSI fastener system appears to have prompted MSxxxx to standardize on the spline-drive system.
Also... might want to look at...
M85730/1 [Spec NASM85730/1, Spline drive I-718, 220-KSI with captive washer, 900F]
NOTE: a few LA steel nuts are rated for 220-KSI... but the classic saying "rusted-N-busted" comes to mind...

The former Voi-Shan is now part of Alcoa Fastening Systems. Use the following link to obtain more information on products, contacts, etc.:

RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
I've looked into Alcoa product range, but they have no direct substitution for the H97 12 point nut.
They have the H55038, which is very very similar (only slight non-functional dimensional differences), but still, I would like to find the NAS, AS... more generic equivalent for the 12 point, self-locking, 220 ksi little bastard.
The spline drive nuts you guys comment are interesting, but I think of them as an alternative/substitution in case I can't find the exact match, because I don't want to change the installation tool at the shop and procedures and whatnot...

RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
MS21084 is a 220 ksi alloy steel, spline drive, self-locking nut, but is an obsolete standard:

NAS1758 & NASM14164 are similar, but still active.
Good luck.
RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
If you wish to still have a 220KSI nut like this then I can recommend the H20-4
htt
This is alloy steel with cad plate.
However I do not think you will find any industry standard (MS, NAS) for this strength level.

Many thanks guys, I think your contributions have been great, I was so stuck trying to find anything!!
Kaynarguy, your response was exactly what I wanted to hear when I started the thread!! I think the application calls for a alloy steel, cadmium plated, I'll propose it to the guys.
RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
When using alloy steel nuts HT above 200-KSI be extra careful in Your installation and corrosion protection schemes, IE: thread lubricants, sealants, CPCs, moisture drainage, mating fastener [bolt/washer] materials and finishes dissimilarity, torque-up procedures, touch-up/over-coat damaged finishes, etc. VHS Steel is much more susceptible to corrosion, SCC and installation damage than say I718, MP35N, etc.

RE: H-97 12 Point Self Locking Nut
This is off-topic, but does Alcoa Fasteners have a facility that will make a small quantity (10 pieces) of a custom design, large thread diameter (5.00-16 UNJF), all-metal bearing locknut for aircraft use? It would be 4340 alloy steel w/silver plate.
Have talked to Shur-Lok about it, but they sounded kind of iffy because of the small quantity. Also tried Whittet-Higgens but got no response at all. If Alcoa can do this, or you know some one else that has the capability to manufacture accurate (ie. ground threads), large diameter, thin section locknuts, please post a reply.
Thanks.

I would like to discuss this nut with you further. I have just recently joined these forums - is there a way to send me a PM (Private Message)? I do not want to put my contact info out for security reasons.
