Air operated valve vs. air operated check valve

Air operated valve vs. air operated check valve

Air operated valve vs. air operated check valve

Hi all,

I've a question about which device, an air operated check valve or an air operated valve, would be more suitable for trapping air in a cyclinder. Currently, the cylinder is controlled by a 3 position valve, but we want to take extra measures that will keep the air trapped in the cylinder.

Regardless of what device is used, I plan to add another 3 position valve thats connected to a different output of the controller to actuate the air trapping device.

Any information is appreciated.

Pilot operated check valve is best in my opinion.  What type of valve are you using?  If it's a manifold-mounted valve, you may be able to get this functionality by adding a double-block-and-check spacer.  It is basically a single component that combines two pilot operated check valves and all piping internally, so when the input pressure is lost both check valves close.

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I'm dealing with air and not hydraulics. I'm using a SMC manifold-mounted valve. I'll look to see if they have a ready solution.

I didn't see anything on SMC's website that could be used. I did find some pilot operated checkvalves from a company called NGT. http://www.ngtvalves.com/B6M00.html

Are you looking for this as a way to keep the cylinder actuated for long periods?  I'm not sure about SMC, but many cylinder companies offer rod locks that will keep the rod extended until the valve actuates the return.  Much easier than trying to keep pressure.
