Michigan Residential code R502.6.2 Joist framing into side of a wood shall be supported by approved framing anchors or on ledger strips not less than 2" x2"

Aproved framing anchors would be standard joist hangers from some one like Simpson or USP.  A 2 x 2 ledger strip would be a would ledger attached to the wood beam/

Depends on load and fastener type.  Nails or screws are acceptable - just make sure you have enough for species and loads.
