What is the method for pipe sizing of vrf a/c system? Is the old/traditional method of refrigeration pipe sizing apply? Is the y-branch is a special fitting?

Check the manufacturer documentation for the size and max length of pipe.

Yes, there is a recommemded max. length and pipe diameter written on the catalog however I am aware if they are counting the losses in fittings especially elbows.
