Sulfur dioxide air filtration

Sulfur dioxide air filtration

Has anyone designed a HVAC system for an airport or near a volcano where sulfur dioxide contamination was a problem? Wondering what the best way to filter SO2 out of outside air is. So far it looks like chemisorption is the answer.

RE: Sulfur dioxide air filtration

Maybe Carcoal filters could work.

RE: Sulfur dioxide air filtration

I think you will have to go with a "chemical" filter.

What is interesting is that I've seen sources that specifically say activated carbon does not work at all - it is totally ineffective especially in humid climates because water tends to fill the voids. On the other hand, I've also seen sources that say it works to a certain extent but is by far not the best thing on the market (chemisorption being ideal).

Logically, I would think that chemisorption would be most effective.

I wonder if the ionic method - not sure what it is called, but it's something like when you electrically charge ions so they bind to the air impurities that you want to remove - would also work (this way there would be no filters to have to replace). I've heard this technology is used on the large industrial scale. Anyone know if it is effective on a small commercial scale? Building is ~5000 square feet.

RE: Sulfur dioxide air filtration

My guess is that I will never be called to design a system with volcanic influences... so much my loss I guess.

On the other hand, none of my buildings will ever have to be evacuated because of lava flow...
