Solidworks 2008, Windows XP Pro, ATI All In Wonder X800 won't run??

Solidworks 2008, Windows XP Pro, ATI All In Wonder X800 won't run??

Solidworks 2008, Windows XP Pro, ATI All In Wonder X800 won't run??

(OP)
One of my computers is a Windows XP Pro system with an ATI All In Wonder X800 video card with the most recent video card drivers installed.  When I go to startup Solidworks the main screen opens but then I get a dialog box popping up saying that the software has encountered and error and must close.  This happens everytime I go to start the software.  I thought it was the video card, so I updated to the latest drivers and still get this error.  Does anybody have any idea what may be going wrong or how I can go about diagnosing this issue?

Thanks again to all your very helpful folks!!!

"I thought it was the video card, so I updated to the latest drivers and still get this error."

You thought correctly! you can apply all the video drivers you can find at that card and it still won't work any better.

Like the nVidia Geforce cards, the ATI All-In-Wonder cards suck for SolidWorks. The are for gaming and/or multi-media ... not solid modelling.

Check this link for certified cards.

yeah I understand that, but get this, before I got my new computer I had a Dell laptop with an crappy ON-BOARD video card, and solidworks ran just fine with it.  Of course it was slow as hell do open any assembly, rotate models with complex geometry or lots of holes, etc.  And I couldn't use 'Real View', but the fact is, that junky onboard video card still ran solidworks just fine.  I would think that this All In Wonder would definately still work.  After all the All In Wonder is based on the Radeon X800 video card which is a great GAMING card I know, NOT a CAD card, but still it should definately run Solidworks in my opinion, at least let the program start up and be able to do some basic drawing, etc.

Everyone has their opinions on what card should work.  They are wrong unless their opinion matches SolidWorks' opinion.  If you want to know it works, use a recommended card.  Otherwise, it's a crap shoot.  However, it is possible that you have a bad install of SW on this machine since it won't open at all.  But check one thing first - Since SW won't even open enough to allow you to check the "Use Software OpenGL" box, you can set that in the registry as well.  Look in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2008\General

for the "Use Software OGL" key and set it to "1".  That key also exists in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2008\General

so change it there too.  Then see if SW will open.
