Hardfacing of Nickel-copper with a Inconel underlay

Hardfacing of Nickel-copper with a Inconel underlay

Hardfacing of Nickel-copper with a Inconel underlay

(OP)
Ok to start off,

Who knows Tech Spec NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 titled Requirements for welding and brazing procedure and performance qualification.

Second, I need to qualify a Hardfacing of Group S-42 Nickel-copper with a Inconel underlay.
The part to be welded is essentially pipe shaped and internally will be roughed out for a inconel layer then with stellite (hardfacing) for the final layer.

I'm confused at to which figure qualification I need to have qualified or should I have 2 different procedures for the different types of welds, I see it as a hardfacing application to be performed in accordance with Figure 6 of page 107.

Would the inconel underlay be considered as cladding, prior to the stellite application. If thats the case then it would be a different figure for testing requirements.

I'm stuck!!
Please help, if needed I could scan the portion detail of drawing.

RE: Hardfacing of Nickel-copper with a Inconel underlay

Ataurino,

I haven't read NavSea but it sounds like two different quals to me: 1) a cladding qual (pass the bend test, chemistry, nde and 2) a hardfacing qual (pass the chemistry and nde).

An argument could be made perhaps that the hardfacing qual could be made on an Inconel pipe.  But you would still need the Inconel overlay qual.  Conceivable, one could argue that a v-groove qual could qualify the overlay of Inconel on copper-nickel, but in service that joint won't really see any tensile.  I prefer to simulate actual manufacturing and service conditions as near as possible in a qual.
