CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

(OP)
hello - i would like to know what is accepted practice for calling out sections over z-z - is it aa-aa or what - any info would be appreciated - thank you

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Yes.

Take a look at ASME Y14.3-2003 section 1.7.3. Identifying Removed Views.

Quote:

...When the alphabet is exhausted, additional removed views shall be identified by double letters in alphabetical order, as in AA-AA, AB-AB, AC-AC, etc.

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of FAQ731-376: Eng-Tips.com Forum Policies recently, or taken a look at http://eng-tips.com/market.cfm?

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Maybe AAB?

After AZ-AZ would be BA-BA, all the way to ZZ-ZZ if you really needed it.

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Not using I,O,Q,S,X,and Z that's what, 20 squared or 400 sections before needing AAA,AAB,etc?

I've seen some J size aircraft drawings with a ton of sections, but nothing close to using up the double letter limit.

Yeh, KENAT was taught well winky smile

I think that I've gotten up to around AJ-AJ before, but that was a rare occurance.

hello again & thank you so much for the replies - we have had so many problems w/ our assembly drawings w/ over seas manufacturing that our v.p. has instructed us to take as many views & sections as possible - this is the very 1st time i myself have run out of letters - once again this forum has become so valuable - thank you again

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Wow, sorry I'm amazed.

Usually managment, or similars, response is to create lots of exploded view or the like.  They claim shop floor workers can't understand sections etc.

However 'take as many views & sections as possible ' still sounds odd.

I'm of the 'minimum number of views necessary to fully define the part/assembly' school.

Eitherway, glad to be of assistance and good luck.

Certainly sounds like a solution to a problem that it not understood.

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

MintJulep,
I agree.
Management should not be dictating how drawings are created anyway. IMO.

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Yes they should, just indirectly.

They should appoint someone who knows what they're doing & invokes the relevant industry standards as a basis for the companies standards.

Anyway this is all off topic, it seems my first post adequately answered the OP.

RE: CALLOUTS FOR SECTIONS OVER Z-Z

Technically, AAA-AAA is not supported by the standard, based on KENAT's quote above.  However, it would be acceptable to use these since the intent is clear.  However, at three letters, you may be looking at creating actual words (CAT-CAT, EAT-EAT) etc.  My impression is that actual words should be avoided.

hello again & sorry to have been away while others were still chiming in - once again i thank you for all the replies - yes - our management is constantly overseeing our drawings & drawing practice - as you have probably seen in my past questions to this forum it is a day to day occurance - sometimes i wish ours would just sit down in front of my computer & have at it!! - how can one run an engineering dept. successfully w/o any standards & practices just ones mans way or the highway - sad - thank you for having a place for me to sound off before i blow a gasket -

fcsuper : "My impression is that actual words should be avoided."

'A' is a word.

Guess we are all now guilty of violating that principle and must be punished. :)
