Qualification of welders

Qualification of welders

Qualification of welders

(OP)
Dear All,
I have question. Qualification of welders according to ASME IX Code QW-301.2. We want to qualify welders to a valid WPS, PQR with PWHT. Now the person who supervise welding of test coupons does he himself have to be certificated ASME code welder or can be welding instructor with expired certificate or QC welding Inspector also with expired certificate?
Thank you.

RE: Qualification of welders

no certification on instructors is required

RE: Qualification of welders

According to the ASME Code Section IX, qualification for the Welder and WPS is responsible by the Manufacturer.

RE: Qualification of welders

The witness of the tests only requirements are that that person is a representative of that company. See QW 300.2

You also made the statement" We want to qualify welders to a valid WPS, PQR with PWHT."

A welder does not "Qualify To" a WPS. A welder uses a WPS during the qualification and may be qualified for only a portion of the WPS used during qualifcation OR above and beyond the ranges allowed for in the WPS.

I just wanted to clarify that statement as it is a common misconception regarding the qualification ranges of welders.

RE: Qualification of welders

As per ASME the Qualification can be made by testing done on the weld coupen, if your test passes your welder is qualified
