SWPS Weld Procedures for Section 1 Work

SWPS Weld Procedures for Section 1 Work

SWPS Weld Procedures for Section 1 Work

(OP)
Hi guys,

Ran accross something today I never new existed. A new supplier of ours (just got their S stamp) provided me with a SWPS for GTAW welding. The form appears to have been filled out correctly however no mention of stress relieving, F number etc can be found on this form. In addition to the SWPS, I was given a copy of ANSI/AWS B2.1-207-96 standard welding procedure spec (WPS)for GTAW welding of C/S (M-1/P-1/S-1 group 1 or 2, good for 1/8"~ 1.5". The info that needs to be there is there for what we are doing.

They intend to use this documentation to support the root pass welding of section 1 work that requires PWHT. This documentation in lieu of using a the typical wps/ pqr documentation I am familiar with.

This doesnt appear to be something new as I found the form in an older code but have no experience with it and I have been around this stuff awhile. Is this document acceptble to above conditions for ASME work even though it was created by AWS? This equipment will ultimately be going into Canada.

As long as the SWPS are described in the S-Stamp holders Quality Manual, this should not be an issue.

RE: SWPS Weld Procedures for Section 1 Work

ASME Section IX addresses the use of SWPS's in QW-500 and Appendix E.

I was given a couple many years ago by a company that went out of business and never issued them and if I remember rights they had provisions for pwht.

RE: SWPS Weld Procedures for Section 1 Work

You are allowed to use SWPS's if:

1: They are allowed by the Construction Code, and in PW-1.2 thay are specifically allowed for Section I work.

2. They are described in the QC Manual (Section I tells you of this requirement).

3. They are in the list in Appendex E of Section IX (not all AWS SWPS's are allowed) and you have conducted and tested a demonstration coupon and documented on QW-485, as pipewelder1999 pointed out.

4. Also, you have to follow them explicitly, no variations or exceptions.

If you pay attention to detail, they can be a good tool and save some WPS qualification time and money.
