Protecting Gauges, Valves, Regulators
Protecting Gauges, Valves, Regulators
(OP)
I am looking for ideas as to how to protect valves, gauges, and regulators that are part of the piping system for bunker C fuel that is pumped from a tank to a plant. Occasionally, the steam trace lines that run along the fuel line fail, and the lines freeze. Often, the fuel line can be saved from completely freezing but we need a way to protect the 2 gauges, 2 valves, and a regulator near the tank from being exposed to the weather. Also, the guages sometimes freeze just from the harsh cold winds in the area near the tank. In emergency situations the operators often have to work in very frigid and windy conditions to repair these items. We are considering putting a small building over the pipe-work to protect the area from the winds and snow that build up. This is a relatively costly option considering how minor the area is in question. Are there any good ideas out there as to prevent these parts from freezing or to protect them during maintenance in cold weather other then an actual structure over them? Just looking for ideas. Thanks!

Consider continuous pumping of heavy oils with a circulating return line back to the tank.
