Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

(OP)
I've just read the below thread...

Super Duplex Interpass Temperature
thread1135-200242: Super Duplex Interpass Temperature

I find the requirement of maximum interpass temperature at 100 Deg.C. from Avesta 2507/P100 for TIG welding.

Due to the previous thread has been closed. Therefore, I create new thread and hope to see your comment for the subject.

RE: Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

150 deg C or less.

RE: Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

Max 150 deg C as per the International Molybdenum Association.

Max 150 deg C as per API RP 582.

Looks like it is 150 deg C all round really.

Look to www.nidi.org for articles on welding stainless steels.

RE: Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

Good catch Strider,
The super duplex grades (2507, 2709, Xeron 100, 255) are very sensitive and require lower temps.  100C agrees with what I have seen in practice.
I know of shops that have chosen to use 100C for all duplex grades.  It isn't that big of a deal and it makes it less likely that a mistake will be made.

I think you'll also find that API 938C calls for differing max ITP's based on material thickness.  I don't have the spec in front of me, but, as I recall, it goes as low as 120 F for thin sections ~ 1.8".

RE: Max. Interpass Temp for Duplex SS

EdStainless:  agree that inter-pass temperature limit to 100 C on all the grades isn't much of a problem.  What we found though was that it was difficult for even very skilled TIG welders (working day in, day out in austenitic materials) to obtain welds in 2205 which remained low enough in ferrite content to have acceptable corrosion resistance.  The problem got worse the smaller you went in pipe diameter.
