Need to design custom bronze hydraulic piston rings

Need to design custom bronze hydraulic piston rings

(OP)
Hi,

I'm new here, sorry for asking for help right off the bat.

I need to manufacture some custom piston rings out of bronze for a 10" bore hydraulic cylinder.  The cylinder will be using water for a fluid, at 150 psi.

Are there any standard design criteria as far as how to go about machining these?  I know you would start with tube stock, but I'm not sure about what diameter to start at, and how/when to machine them to get a lap type joint on the ends.  Anybody out there with experience with this?

My thought is, to machine the rings to the diameters that you'd want when the rings are free in the grooves and then cut them and mill in the lap joints.  Does this make sense?

Also would SAE 660 bronze be a good candidate for this?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

KirtM,

You are on the right track. Many shops are set up to cut the lap joints, often more cost effective than making your own set up. A shop I have used is www.trigonproducts.com

I would not recommend bronze in a water cylinder. Acetal/Delrin is a good material but will require an expander underneath to hold at low pressures. A simple step cut ring will work if the step width is snug in the groove. http://www.expresseal.com/ is possible source or visit www.danzcoinc.com
