2D contact & deformation

2D contact & deformation

2D contact & deformation

(OP)
Hi,

I am trying to model the contact deformation that occurs when 2 parts mate.  I have constructed my 2D model and have created a contact surface between the lines that are going to be making contact.  Basically my simulation has a sharp corner (say from a rectagle) hitting the side of another rectangle.  So the contact is like a corner colliding with a side (I hope that is clear).  I am expecting/hoping the sharp corner will "crush" and flatten out as it makes contact.

I am having issues getting the simulation to run properly.  I have very defined elements in the contact area.  When I run the solution it keeps bisecting and never gets anywhere.  It bisects down to something like 5e-5 (on a simulation with end time of 1.0).

Is the standard linear model (I am using steel 4340) sufficient?  This type of contact deformation seems like it should be somewhat standard.

Thank you!

RE: 2D contact & deformation

Set KEYOPT(4)=2 for your contact.  Also, a decrease in contact stiffness may be required to achieve convergence.
