AISC-13th weld size question

AISC-13th weld size question

AISC-13th weld size question

(OP)
I am looking at AISC-13th Example K.13 Rectangular HSS Strut End Plate. In this example, an HSS4x4x1/4 section is end welded to a 5/8" thickness end plate, and it says, minimum weld size for t=5/8" is 1/4", so use 1/4" weld.

I am confused here, to me above example seems contradict with AISC-13th page16.1-96 Table J2.4, in which minimum weld size is based on the thickness of thinner part, so it should based on HSS4x4x1/4, and minimum weld size is 1/8". at the same time, the maximum weld size limit for 1/4" thickness (HSS section) is 1/4-1/16=3/16". So it can't be 1/4" weld as  shown in AISC-13th Example K.13.

Am I wrong or AISC-13th Example K.13 is wrong?

Thanks a lot for your help!

RE: AISC-13th weld size question

The weld is a tee connection, the wall of the tube to the plate.  No minimum applies for this type of connection.

RE: AISC-13th weld size question

They should have been using 1/4" to calculate the minimum.

But, the maximum is determined by the thickness being welded to.  You're not welding to the 1/4" thickness of the HSS wall, you're welding to the face of it, so the 1/4" dimension is irrelevant.  You can put a 1" fillet weld on this joint if you like.

RE: AISC-13th weld size question

Excuse me, I meant no MAXIMUM size restriction exists.
