Hydrology

(OP)
Might be a dumb question but; How do I classify the "soil group" for a portion of land I intend to use the rational method on? I just moved to this part of the state and I am extremely unfamiliar with the soil in this area. I do not have a geo report for any surrounding area nor do I have one for the area in question. I can't seem to find any documentation describing what each soil group is to make a determination on my own. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

RE: Hydrology

best to go out to the site and get your hands dirty.  classify the soil yourself

RE: Hydrology

I agree with the Websoilsurvey as the place to start, and you should at least take a look at the area in question, for development trends, etc.  Although you may not be able to go out and classify the soil yourself, you might talk to a local soil scientist for some guidance if you're not comfortable with the websurvey and visual inspection.

RE: Hydrology

Find the USDA Soil Survey for your county.

RE: Hydrology

On second thought, use the link that RWF7437 provided.

Thanks RWF, that's a great/useful site.

RE: Hydrology

general soil surveys may be fine for planning studies if no other data is available, but you really need to ground truth your data.  this means, get somebody out to the site to field classify the soil.
