Soil Compaction

Soil Compaction

Soil Compaction

(OP)
Good afternoon,

I'm a mechanical engineer doing a project which consists in part of sawcutting and excavating some soil below the slab.  My structural engineer just got back to me by email saying - "Compact to 95% SPDD".  Just wondering what SPDD stood for?  Thanks.

RE: Soil Compaction

Probably, he meant Standard Proctor Dry Density.  This is a commonly used test in the highway and general Civil engineering fields. These days, field testing is usually done by a company specializing in such work.

Basically what he is asking for is a very dense subgrade soil; about 95% as dense as it would be possible to achieve under ideal conditions.

Acronymically yours,

RWF

RE: Soil Compaction

Standard Proctor - ASTM D698

RE: Soil Compaction

Actually should be a "max" in there - Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density.

Thanks for the info!
