Temporary earth retention design - please suggest references

(OP)
Hi all - I'm new to eng-tips.  What a fantastic resource.

After a few years away from design, it looks like I'll be doing some design again, mostly in the temporary earth retention area.  It's for my new employer, a bridge contractor, and the earth retention is going to be probably nothing more than sheet piling or H-piles/lagging.

I have some previous exposure to this type of engineering, but am looking for someone to recommend any useful publications on this.  I mostly need to refresh myself on this type of design work.  I have Geotechnical Engineering by Braja Das, Foundation Engineering by Braja Das, as well as all my steel and timber design references.

Would The Handbook of Temporary Structures by Rattay be any good?  Any other references that anyone could recommend?

RE: Temporary earth retention design - please suggest references

Trenching and Shoring Manuals are available in many state DOT's websites.  Try CalTrans as a starting point.

Obtain and Read the Pile Buck Handbook. While you areat it, get thePile Buck Pile driving Book. Slideruleera's website has a copy of the US Steel Steel Sheet Pile Design Manual. Download that, read it and solve the example problems. DFI, PDCA NSSPA all have good references at their website. Ratay;s book is a good reference for temporary work, there is some dicussion of sheeting and a chapter on cofferdams. Spend some money and get some of these specific references. Most texyt books don't really go into details enough to handle design situations. (Fang's book and to some extent Bowles book are exceptions)
Note that designing temporary work is different than designing permenant work.
Good Luck

I find the Earth Retention Systems Handbook by Alan Macnab very helpful.

Design of Sheet Pile Walls, Technical Engineering Design Guides as adapted from the US Army Corps of Engineers, No. 15 (EM 1110-2-2504), ASCE Press.

Underwater Construction Using Cofferdams, Harold V. Anderson, Best Publishing Company.

Any of you have a copy of Principles of Foundation Engineering, by Braja Das?  If so I have a question to ask and maybe you can help me.

Also, any of you have a copy of the US Steel Sheet Pile Design Manual?  Same thing - I have gone through it and have a question for you and maybe you can help me.

RE: Temporary earth retention design - please suggest references

btomcik - Ok... if I'm going to put the US Steel Sheet Piling Manual on my website, and tell you that it is there, I suppose I should take a shot at answering your question about it. No guarantees, though...  What is your question?

I'll make a new post for the question.

NAVFAC DM 7.2 (Foundations and Earth Structures) is useful for developing your soil loads.  Goldberg's Lateral Earth Support and Underpinning comes in handy fairly often, especially for soldier pile and lagging designs.

RE: Temporary earth retention design - please suggest references

I just bought a First edition copy of Karl Terzahgi's - Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice at a used book store for $10.  I'm still trying to find someone to share the moment with...

You can get Lateral Support Systems and Underpinning (1976) Goldberg-Zoino & Assoc. Vols 1-3 from NTIS
